Recruitment started with contacting the heads of several high schools and universities to acquire institutional consent. Afterwards, in case of the high schools, classes were visited asking the students to participate. Data collection was carried out in the classroom, collecting data from one class at the time. In case of the college and university students, data collection was carried out in dormitories in a systematic manner. More specifically, research assistants contacted all the students in the dormitories face‐to‐face to Alcoholics Anonymous participate in the study. Following their consent, buccal swabs (assisted face‐to‐face by a research assistant) were taken, and then, the self‐report questionnaire was administered.

It is envisaged that the study will provide a unique opportunity to test possible mechanisms and causal pathways mediating the associations of genetic factors, psychological characteristics, and addictions. Several studies regarding the effects ofpaternal cocaine use on offspring behavior conclude thatindividuals from the next generation were more likely to consumedrugs of abuse (90). There are endogenous lipid-based retrogradeneurotransmitters that form the endocannabinoid system whichinfluences the motivation for natural rewards (social interaction, food, sexual activity) and modulates the rewarding effects ofaddictive drugs. Endocannabinoids bind to the CB1Rs and this leadsto suppression in glutamatergic nerve terminals and suppression ofinhibition in GABA-ergic nerve terminals. Cannabidiol (CBD) is also synthesized by thecannabis plant and, in comparison to THC, lacks intoxicatingeffects, and can offset some of the acute effects of THC. Recentstudies suggest it has a positive role in the treatment ofepilepsy, addictions, anxiety disorders and psychosis (61,62).

The Swedish cohort study of almost half a million males solely relied on a standardised IQ test battery to assess general intelligence. These tests arguably focus on a narrow component of mental functioning, missing the contribution of emotion and motivational processes to cognition (Ganuthula V.R.R. et al, 2025). IQ measures have also been critiqued for their poor ability to predict real-world decision-making and reasoning (Stanovich K.E, 2009). The present study addresses this limitation by triangulating data across measures of IQ and cognitive performance that vary in validity and rigour.

Genetics of Addiction

  • Substances and certain activities affect your brain, especially the reward center of your brain.
  • Studying how genetic influences affect substance use beyond early adulthood, and what factors predict different trajectories of use and remission, is an area in need of further research that could have important implications for prevention and intervention.
  • The validity to predict complex behavioural and psychiatric phenotypes has been well demonstrated for many traits 55.
  • This gender imbalance potentially limits the generalisability of the epidemiological findings to females.

We offer aftercare programs that provide continued therapy, support groups, and relapse prevention strategies to help maintain sobriety post-treatment. Molecules that bind to receptors and, although they do not have intrinsic action, inhibit signal transduction. A class of structurally similar amine neurotransmitters, including dopamine, noradrenaline and adrenaline, that are derived from the amino acid tyrosine.

GWAS genotypes, other ‘omics data in brain, and addiction phenotypes are seldom available in the same dataset. Other ‘omics data derived in blood or other peripheral tissues that are easily accessible in living participants may offer informative biomarkers of addiction but overall provide poor indicators of neurobiology. Poor correlations in RNA expression levels between blood and brain has been repeatedly shown 136, 137, 135. Most recently, pilot GTEx analyses with RNA expression measured in 43 tissues showed that blood vs. brain had the most distinct expression profiles among the tissue comparisons 135. There is also limited overlap of meQTL and eQTL 136, 137, 135 variants mapped in blood vs. brain. Thus, when analyzing gene regulatory potential to study the neurobiology of addiction, it is critical to use disease-relevant brain tissue.

Understanding the genetic influences on hallucinogen abuse can have important implications for treatment approaches. Recognizing that genetics can play a role in an individual’s susceptibility to substance abuse can help inform personalized treatment plans. Research has shown that is addiction genetic genetics play a role in the development of substance addiction and abuse, including hallucinogens.

is addiction genetic or environmental

Understanding the genetic and cognitive factors that contribute could help develop more targeted, personalised therapies. Also, recognising the disorder’s complexity may reduce stigma and encourage individuals to seek treatment. At Roaring Brook Recovery, we believe in compassionate, high-quality care that treats the whole person — not just the addiction.

  • Preliminary data suggest that ketamine can prolong abstinence from alcohol and heroin as well as reduce the craving for cocaine, but ketamine itself may lead to addiction if used ill-advisedly exceeding the therapeutical dose (43).
  • CYP2A6 is responsible for metabolizingnicotine and variability in the metabolic rate contributes to thesusceptibility of tobacco dependence, withdrawal symptoms and therisk of lung cancer (53,54).
  • This knowledge empowers individuals and their families to seek appropriate help and provides a foundation for the personalized treatment that is necessary for true healing.
  • Higher intelligence may decrease the odds of nicotine dependence 96 and nicotine dependence increases the risk of schizophrenia (even when corrected for CUD) 111.

IQ was categorised as low, medium or high in relation to the population mean, to enable clinical interpretation. Protective relationships, therapy, and adaptive coping can significantly buffer risk. Family dysfunction did not determine timing — but it increased vulnerability overall. Treatment that ignores trauma — especially sexual trauma — risks missing the engine beneath the behavior. If you or someone you care about may have an addiction, talk to your provider right away.
